January 2010: Balance Kapha

Kapha Season in Ayurvedic Medicine is a season when earth and water are the primary influences, both external and internally. We are all made up of the five elements; water, earth, air (wind), ether (space), and fire. Just as nature contains these elements, each one of us has our own individual combinations of these elements. It is what makes each of us unique. The qualities of Kapha (earth and water) are heavy, dull, cold, and damp. In January, Kapha elements of earth and water dominate. Things become heavy, solid, cold, and stagnant. There is a natural inclination to be still or move slowly. In order to balance Kapha, it is important to cultivate the opposite; to move with energy.

The areas in the body that are most affected by Kapha are the lungs, and heart. Doing Yoga in Kapha season means getting up early and focusing on drawing energy up and improving its flow in the chest, lungs, heart and arms. Key yoga poses are Sun Salutations, standing flowing poses that are invigorating, movements that focus on the arms and chest, and backbends. Just as energizing poses help to balance Kapha, so do energizing foods such as leafy greens, broccoli, and spices that are warming. It is important not to overeat or eat too many starchy, processed foods that make you feel tired or heavy.

One of the most beautiful ways to balance Kapha is through giving, loving and developing compassion. This moves energy in the chest, and heart and brings balance to your own heart as well as the hearts of others.

Kapha Thoughts: light, warm, invigorate and love.
